Eckie at eight and a half years

A very tolerant dog Who was keeping who warm?

She was one of those special animals that comes along every now and then. Eckie was shown to her Championship and then retired so the younger generation could have a go. She really didn't mind as she was actually a "homebody" at heart. From then on she was in charge of looking after the house and preferred to spend as little time outside as was possible. Five minutes twice a day was enough. The exception was when we were in the garden. Leaving her inside under these circumstances would result in loud howls.

She was an avid bunny and lizard watcher. When we were out in the bush clearing or weeding, Eckie could be found patiently waiting for a lizard to come back out of it's hole. She would stand still as a statue for long periods of time which often resulted in her coming up to us with a big lizard in her mouth to show us how clever she was. She never killed them and spat them out when told to. They would scuttle off somewhere and the game would begin again.

She was completely reliable and the only animal who we would trust off lead remotely near traffic. She could often be found mooching around show ground picnic tables looking for titbits. The response to "There is a Dobermann loose!" was "It's OK - that isn't really a Dobermann - it's Eckie.".

She had two litters -

Eckie and ChelseaThe first to Ch. Parima Great Mogul produced eight puppies including Jenson Sacher Torte CDX and Ch. Jenson Chelsea Bun (a multiple Best in Show winner).
The photo on the right is a very rare one of Chelsea as a pup being still.

Eckie with Striker and SpeedStriker and SpeedThe second litter was an artificial insemination using semen made available by the generosity of Lea & Neil Rushforth. The sire was Am. & Can. Ch. Soquel's Thunder Bolt WAC (USA) (we showed Eckie a picture of him afterwards). Only two pups were conceived but they were two special boys -
Grand Ch. Jenson Thunderstruck (ai) - "Striker" and
Ch. Jenson Distant Thunder (ai) - "Speed".
Both are Best in Show winners. By coincidence both gained their Championship on the same day.

Eckie slept on her own bed next to our bed and followed us relentlessly around the house and garden. I can't open a gate without thinking that if she were still alive she would be there waiting to be allowed through. We miss her, but she has passed on her wonderful nature to her children and their children. Most have that little bit of Eckie's specialness.
